In the world of Speech Communication there are two types of paradigms. There is "positivistic" and "naturalistic". Positivistic involves science and data-oriented like things, which then gives birth to things that are quantitative. Naturalistic is like the opposite, it is social and interpretive and in overall meaning qualitative.
That was just the background so that you can get a feel and better understanding where each fall in line.
Quantitative refers to statistics and facts that are all around us. It is a key method when conducting research. It is a very respected and relaible way to view something and report it. I know that a lot of things are determined by doing quantitative research. For instance, think of the schools when they want to know how the learning is going as a whole nation or simply as a state or region. They give test and collect data so they can see a ratio which then turns into statistics that are then stored and relied upon for future reference.
Qualitative refers to the quality of something; whether something is good or bad. We see this a lot and most times quantitative comes in the way of qualitative. If something is of good quality but is expensive or is not popular it will stop us from buying it.

Why Communications?!
Sometimes I feel as if I want to conquer the world. I want to do it all but I have to remember that there is only 24 hours in a day. No matter how energetic I believe myself to be, I still have to sleep at least 8 hours a day.
So I choose Speech Communications as a major because it best suits me. It allows me to explore as much as I would like to in this world. I could could work in a corporation or I could be a radio host. My possibilities are ENDLESS. And that fits me perfectly. I truly believe that the sky is the limit. Communication is my first nature so majoring in it comes easily.
Upon graduation, being a double major (Psychology and Speech Communications), I would like to start off as a radio host and later either having my own television show, or working in a Public Relations Corporation. I love meeting new people and reaching out to them in so many ways. You never know how you impact someone's life and that is what I want to do. I want to serve as a role model for someone while still enjoying every inch of my life and career, with doing something that comes naturally. I look up to those who can say "Wow, I can't believe I get paid to have fun" and people who say "I enjoy waking up to my life". I live to utter those words and encourage people to do something they love. Being a Speech Communication major has so many opportunities that allows me to strive and open and willing to receive and embrace everything it has to offer.
